I joined modeling and rigging team on Agent Binky in 2018. This was a really fun project. Great team, great designs, and enough freedom to put some of your own voice into your work. It was a blast. The team at Nelvana was also really good at pushing people to try areas of the job they hadn’t done before. Over the season I was able to get a great deal of character modeling experience. The show was also particularly fun because of it’s main focus, the DIY style gadgets. In a way it reminded me a lot of the sewer contraptions I grew up watching in the old Ninja Turtle cartoon. The style of the show was also really fun because (at least originally) it was meant to take place in a retro-modern 1970’s.

MAIN CHARACTERS

AMELIA

3D MODELING

Such a fun character to make. One of my favorites. I liked the classic cartoon Coke-bottle glasses effect of the giant eyes and really tiny eyes when she wasn’t wearing them. It was also interesting going back and forth with the rigging artist and groom artist to see what compromises we had to make in order for the character to function it’s best.

 LOO

3D MODELING

Loo was a nice and easy character to put together. His space suit was the fun part. It was basically a reverse submarine. A lot bulkier and mechanical than the other suits. The design provided was one 3/4 angle image of the character which left some great room for interpretation. The back of the backpack, I took some inspiration from Buzz Lightyear and a jet turbine. The commlink, I wanted it to look like a subwoofer, this idea didn’t carry through in the end and was eventually textured as a regular mesh speaker like the others.

BINKY - P.U.R.S.T. GEAR

3D MODELING (COSTUME ONLY)

The Binky model itself was done by the very talented Kelvin Sam, who was also the main character rigger on the show. I was tasked with working on the space suit he wore, which mainly consisted of a helmet and belt. The body suit was pretty much a reworking of Binky’s existing body mesh but the helmet I got to have some fun with coming up with different ways to make it work. I was originally concerned that the space helmet wouldn’t have as much visibility so I made an option where the visor would open above like a motorcycle helmet. I’m really glad they chose the space helmet route.

 HUMAN CHARACTERS

MOM (“BIG HUMAN”)

3D MODELING / XGEN GROOM

This was the first character and asset I was assigned on Binky. I really enjoyed this character and it is still probably one of my favorite parts of working on the show. Because this character was started so early in the production, the groom artist hadn’t been brought on yet and I was able to learn and make the XGen hair for this character. The geo was also used as the base for the majority of the other human characters. The eyeballs would also eventually be replaced with Binky’s eyes so all of the characters would match.

NEIGHBOUR (“OLD HUMAN")

3D MODELING

Another fun character to make, and also an example of reusing the base mesh from the Mom character. The hair geo would serve as a proxy for the animators and would be replaced in renders by the XGen groom (which is why it doesn’t look as perfect as it should)

VEHICLES

 MOM’S CAR (AMC GREMLIN)

3D MODELING / RIGGING

This was a prop I was really excited about when I saw the designs for the show. What a thrill when it was assigned to me. It's probably the clearest part of that 1970’s theme that the show was originally going for. I made sure I went all out on making this prop. The designs left enough freedom for me to fill in the blanks with all the extra details I wanted. I took special care to make sure everything from the exterior to the interior and suspension looked and functioned great. I just can’t believe I forgot the interior rear view mirror (nobody else seemed to spot that either though).

 GARBAGE TRUCK / MAIL TRUCK

3D MODELING / RIGGING

The generic vehicles were a lot quicker because the interiors did not have to be shown. The Gremlin would serve as the base for a lot of the parts and would also use the same rig.

 ROCKET LAUNCHER / SKATEBOARD BLOWER

3D MODELING / RIGGING

Agent Gordon’s DIY junk contraption vehicles. These were always really fun interpreting the designs to function. The design supervisor, Marc Poulin, is very much a Star Wars fan, which is really awesome …and pretty apparent in the inspiration for these next vehicles. It was great how much fun everyone was having making this show. A couple of my favorite parts of making these vehicles were coming up with some ways too beef up the control panels, so I added some knobs, watches, clocks, and other appliances that looked like gauges. Another small detail (for when the ‘70s theme of the show was still being perused) I made sure the pop cans had the 1970s tear off tabs.

 P.U.R.S.T. VEHICLES

3D MODELING

Some vehicles that appeared in the finally. A little more slick because I’m guessing these were built by the spy agency rather than Gordon. I’m still curious to see how these turned out in the final render of the show.

 PROPS

3D MODELING

Lots of props, here are some of my favorites. I probably got to rig half of the props I built whenever I could, but usually they would be taken care of by Kelvin who is a master at the process and preferred it to modeling.
